Thoughts of a Traitor
"With slippery, slimy, treacherous hands,
I’ve traveled through dark, unwholesome lands:
Haunted by self and fear of the dawn,
Forced to travel forever on.
Searching for something I desperately need,
My focus is put on quickened speed.
Along crag, pool, and withering reed,
I find you alone and in need.
You want me to be your quick, little guide,
You want me to change-be on YOUR side!
Help you? Oh, yes if it suits my scheme.
I’ll only act as I well deem.
You say you trust me and see hidden good!
I could be nice like you wish I would,
All right then, I’ll lead and you follow,
Down into the marshes we’ll wallow.
I will take you safely through marsh and fen,
As long as I count you as a friend.
You take a risk in letting me guide,
I have a bad habit of turning aside.
Please do, take a risk and let me guide you,
Down a tunnel where doom may find you.
Evil lurks there with fear and despair,
She weaves her bitter webs; do beware.
In order to take what you own,
I will lead you down to her wretched home.
She’ll take you for a sweet, juicy meal,
This will leave time for me to steal.
Given just a little precious time,
What you own will soon be mine.
I’ll sneak off abroad and hide away,
Keep it safe from the light of Day.
Remember, I am what you think I am not.
One last reminder lest you forgot,
If you trust me too much; make me stay,
I’ll grab the ring and run away!"
